Addition & Subtraction (4-digit)
Add and subtract numbers up to 4 digits
Adding 4-Digit Numbers
To add 4-digit numbers, line up the digits by place value. Start adding from the ones column and move left. If a column adds up to 10 or more, carry to the next column.
Example
Addition Example
3 456
+ 2 378
-------
Ones: 6 + 8 = 14 → write 4, carry 1
Tens: 5 + 7 + 1 = 13 → write 3, carry 1
Hundreds: 4 + 3 + 1 = 8
Thousands: 3 + 2 = 5
Answer: 5 834
Subtracting 4-Digit Numbers
To subtract, line up digits by place value. Start from the ones column. If the top digit is smaller, borrow from the next column to the left.
Example
Subtraction Example
6 403
- 2 758
-------
Ones: 3 < 8, borrow → 13 - 8 = 5
Tens: 9 (after borrow) - 5 = 4 → but 0-1 = need to borrow again
... 6 403 - 2 758 = 3 645
Note
Remember
Always line up the digits by place value. Work from right to left. Check your answer by adding: if 6 403 - 2 758 = 3 645, then 3 645 + 2 758 should equal 6 403.
