Poetry

Read, analyse and write simple poems

What is Poetry?

Poetry is a special kind of writing that uses rhythm, rhyme and strong images to express feelings and ideas. Poems are usually written in lines and stanzas (groups of lines), not paragraphs.
Example

A Simple Poem

The Rain Drops fall from the grey sky, Tap-tapping on the tin roof high. Puddles form along the street, Splashing underneath my feet.

Poetic Devices

• Rhyme: words that end with the same sound (sky/high, street/feet) • Alliteration: same starting sound repeated (Peter Piper picked) • Simile: comparing using 'like' or 'as' (as tall as a mountain) • Onomatopoeia: words that sound like their meaning (buzz, splash, tap)
Note

Writing Your Own Poem

Choose a topic you care about. Close your eyes and picture it. What do you see, hear, smell and feel? Write it down using interesting words. Your poem doesn't have to rhyme!
