Drama: Role Play

Act out everyday situations and stories

Acting Out Stories

Drama is the art of pretending to be someone else and telling stories through action. In role play, you imagine being another person — a doctor, a teacher, a shopkeeper. You use your voice, face and body to show feelings and actions. Drama helps us understand others.
Example

Role Play Activity

Try acting out these situations: • A doctor helping a sick patient • A customer buying bread at a spaza shop • A teacher explaining something to a class • A parent comforting a scared child Think about: How does this person walk? Talk? What expression do they have?
Note

Remember

In drama, we use our whole body to communicate: facial expressions (happy, sad, angry), gestures (pointing, waving), movement (fast = excited, slow = sad) and voice (loud = angry, soft = scared). The audience watches and understands the story through these.
