Dance & Movement

Creative movement and simple dance sequences

Creative Movement

Dance is moving your body in time with music or rhythm. Creative movement means using your whole body to express ideas and feelings — you can be a tree in the wind, a wave on the sea, or a bird in flight. Dance combines steps, jumps, turns and gestures.
Example

Movement Activities

Move like: • A heavy elephant (slow, stomping) • A light butterfly (soft, floating) • A robot (stiff, jerky) • A snake (smooth, slithering) Create a short dance sequence: 1. Start in a shape (frozen pose) 2. Move for 8 beats 3. End in a different shape
Note

Remember

Dance uses: space (high, medium, low levels), time (fast or slow), energy (strong or gentle). South Africa has many dance traditions — Zulu indlamu, Tswana tsutsube, Cape Malay riel dance, gumboot dancing (from mine workers). Dance tells stories and celebrates culture.
