Halves, Thirds & Quarters

Recognize and compare halves, thirds and quarters

Halves, Thirds and Quarters 🍰

A half (½) = 1 out of 2 equal parts. A third (⅓) = 1 out of 3 equal parts. A quarter (¼) = 1 out of 4 equal parts. The parts must always be equal!
Example

Fractions of a Whole

A cake cut into 3 equal pieces: each piece is ⅓ (one third) 🍰 If you eat 2 pieces, you ate ⅔ (two thirds). A chocolate bar with 4 blocks: 1 block = ¼ 2 blocks = 2/4 = ½ 3 blocks = ¾
Example

Comparing Fractions

Which is bigger: ½ or ¼? Imagine sharing a pizza with 2 people vs 4 people. Fewer people = bigger slices! ½ > ¼ and ½ > ⅓
Note

Remember 💡

More parts = smaller pieces! A quarter is smaller than a half because you're cutting into more pieces. The bottom number (denominator) tells you how many equal parts.
