Understand area as surface covered

What is Area? 📐

Area is the amount of surface a shape covers. We measure area by counting how many square units fit inside a shape. Think of it like tiling a floor with square tiles!

Counting Squares

Count the squares inside the shape: ⬜⬜⬜ ⬜⬜⬜ This rectangle covers 6 square units! ⬜⬜⬜⬜ ⬜⬜⬜⬜ ⬜⬜⬜⬜ This shape covers 12 square units!

Comparing Areas

Shape A covers 8 squares. Shape B covers 5 squares. Shape A has a bigger area because 8 > 5. Which has more area: your desk or your book? Your desk! It covers more space.

Remember 💡

Area is about the space INSIDE a shape. Count all the squares inside carefully. Don't mix up area (inside) with perimeter (the border around the outside)!
