Number Patterns

A number pattern is a list of numbers that follow a rule. We can count forwards by adding the same number each time, or backwards by subtracting. Finding the rule helps us know what number comes next!
Example

Counting in 2s

2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 ... (add 2 each time) What comes next? 14! ✅ Count in 2s using pairs: 👟👟 👟👟 👟👟 👟👟 — 2, 4, 6, 8 shoes!
Example

Counting in 5s and 10s

5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 ... (add 5 each time) 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 ... (add 10 each time) ✋✋✋✋ — Count the fingers in 5s: 5, 10, 15, 20!
Note

Remember

To find a pattern: look at how the numbers change each time. Ask: 'Am I adding or subtracting? How much each time?' Then use the rule to find the next number.
