Collecting Data
Sort and classify objects, make picture graphs
What is Data?
Data is information we collect. We can ask questions, count things, and write down what we find. For example: 'What is your favourite fruit?' We collect everyone's answers — that is data!
Example
Collecting Data
Ask your classmates: What is your favourite colour?
🔴 Red: 5 friends
🔵 Blue: 3 friends
🟢 Green: 4 friends
🟡 Yellow: 2 friends
Now we know that red is the most popular!
Example
Making a Pictograph
We can draw pictures to show data:
🍎🍎🍎🍎🍎 — Apples (5)
🍌🍌🍌 — Bananas (3)
🍊🍊🍊🍊 — Oranges (4)
Which fruit is the favourite? Apples! Which has the fewest? Bananas!
Note
Remember
Data helps us answer questions. We can count, sort, and draw pictures to show what we found. A pictograph uses pictures to show data so it is easy to compare.
