Cells & Tissues

Cell division, specialised cells, tissues and organs

Cells, Tissues, and Organs

Cells are the basic building blocks of life. Cell division (mitosis) produces new cells for growth and repair. Specialised cells have specific functions. Groups of similar cells form tissues, tissues form organs, organs form organ systems.
Example

Levels of Organisation

Cells -> Tissues -> Organs -> Organ Systems -> Organism. Example: muscle cell -> muscle tissue -> heart (organ) -> circulatory system -> human body. Mitosis produces two identical daughter cells.
Note

Key Point

Mitosis is essential for growth, repair, and maintenance. Cancer occurs when cell division becomes uncontrolled, forming tumours.

Key Vocabulary

MitosisCell division that produces two identical daughter cells
TissueA group of similar cells working together to perform a function
