Music Appreciation

Analyse music from different genres and eras

Listening to and Understanding Music

Music appreciation means listening to music actively and understanding what makes it work. Consider the melody, harmony, rhythm, instrumentation, structure, dynamics and lyrics. Understanding different genres and eras enriches your listening experience and musical knowledge.
Example

Active Listening Guide

When listening to a piece of music, ask: • What instruments/voices do I hear? • What is the tempo and time signature? • What is the structure (verse-chorus, ABA, rondo)? • What mood or emotion does it create? How? • What genre and era does it belong to? • How does it compare to other music I know? Listen to SA jazz (Masekela), classical, amapiano and gospel — compare!
Note

Remember

Music appreciation is not about liking or disliking — it's about understanding. You can appreciate the skill in music you don't personally enjoy. Broaden your listening beyond your comfort zone. The more genres you know, the richer your musical understanding becomes.
