Material Processing
Joining techniques: welding, soldering, adhesives
Joining Techniques
Joining connects separate pieces of material together. Permanent joints cannot be undone easily (welding, soldering, gluing). Temporary joints can be taken apart (screws, bolts, clips). The choice depends on materials being joined, strength needed and whether it needs to come apart.
Example
Joining Methods
Permanent:
• Welding: melting metal edges together (very strong)
• Soldering: using melted tin-lead alloy to join electronics
• Adhesive (glue): PVA for wood, epoxy for metal/plastic
• Rivets: metal pins hammered flat
Temporary:
• Screws and bolts: can be removed and reused
• Clips and snaps: press-fit connections
• Nuts and bolts: very common mechanical fastening
Note
Remember
Match the joining method to the materials and purpose. Never weld or solder without proper safety equipment and supervision! For school projects, screws, bolts and appropriate adhesives are safest. Always consider if the joint needs to be strong, waterproof, heat-resistant or removable.
Key Vocabulary
WeldingJoining metals by melting them together
