After WWII, Africans demanded independence from colonial rule. Nationalist movements formed to fight for freedom. Leaders like Nkrumah (Ghana), Kenyatta (Kenya) and Nyerere (Tanzania) led their countries to independence.

Nationalism means wanting your nation to govern itself. African leaders used different methods: peaceful negotiation, civil disobedience and armed struggle. SA was one of the last countries to gain freedom for all.
