Technology Process
Investigate, design, make, evaluate and communicate
The Technology Process
The technology process is a systematic way of solving problems through design. It has five steps: Investigate (research the problem), Design (draw possible solutions), Make (build your chosen design), Evaluate (test and assess) and Communicate (present your solution). This process guides all technology projects.
Example
Applying the Design Process
Problem: Need a device to carry books without hurting your back.
1. Investigate: Research existing bags, ask users what they need
2. Design: Sketch 3 different bag designs with labels
3. Make: Build the best design using available materials
4. Evaluate: Test — Does it hold enough? Is it comfortable?
5. Communicate: Present your design with a poster explaining how it works
Note
Remember
The technology process is not always linear — you may go back and redesign after evaluating. Good designs solve real problems, are safe, affordable and can be made with available materials. Always consider the user's needs and constraints (cost, time, materials).
Key Vocabulary
Design processA systematic method for solving problems through design
InvestigateResearch and gather information about a problem
EvaluateTest and judge how well a solution works
ConstraintA limitation that the design must work within (cost, size, materials)
