Art Appreciation

Analyse and discuss artworks by SA artists

Looking at and Discussing Art

Art appreciation means looking at artworks carefully, understanding them and forming opinions. When analysing art, describe what you SEE (elements), analyse how it's ORGANISED (principles), interpret what it MEANS (message/feeling) and evaluate its SUCCESS (your judgement).
Example

Analysing a South African Artwork

Looking at a Gerard Sekoto painting: Describe: People in a township street, warm colours, busy scene Analyse: Diagonal lines create movement, contrast between light and shadow Interpret: Shows the energy and humanity of township life during apartheid Evaluate: Effective use of colour captures warmth despite difficult conditions Other SA artists to study: Irma Stern, William Kentridge, Esther Mahlangu
Note

Remember

There is no single 'correct' interpretation of art — your response is valid if you can support it with evidence from the artwork. Art reflects its time and place. SA art tells our story — struggle, joy, identity, culture and hope.
