Introduction to Percentages

Understand percentages and convert between fractions, decimals and percentages

Understanding Percentages

Percent means 'per hundred'. 50% means 50 out of 100. Percentages, fractions and decimals are all related: 50% = 1/2 = 0.5. Percentages help us compare parts of different wholes.
Example

Converting Between Forms

Fraction → Percentage: 3/4 = 75% (divide 3÷4 = 0.75, then ×100) Decimal → Percentage: 0.6 = 60% (multiply by 100) Percentage → Fraction: 25% = 25/100 = 1/4 Percentage → Decimal: 30% = 0.30 = 0.3
Example

Finding a Percentage of an Amount

Find 20% of R150: 20% = 20/100 = 1/5 150 ÷ 5 = R30 Or: 10% of 150 = 15, so 20% = 15 × 2 = R30
Note

Remember

10% = divide by 10. 50% = divide by 2. 25% = divide by 4. To find any percentage: divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by the amount.
