Mode, Median and Mean
These are measures of central tendency — they tell us what is 'typical' in a set of data.
• Mode: the value that appears most often
• Median: the middle value when data is ordered
• Mean: the average (add all values ÷ number of values)
Example
Finding Mode, Median and Mean
Data: 3, 5, 7, 5, 9, 5, 8
Ordered: 3, 5, 5, 5, 7, 8, 9
Mode = 5 (appears 3 times — most frequent)
Median = 5 (middle value of 7 numbers)
Mean = (3+5+5+5+7+8+9) ÷ 7 = 42 ÷ 7 = 6
Example
Even Number of Values
Data: 2, 4, 6, 8
Median = (4 + 6) ÷ 2 = 5 (average of two middle values)
Mean = (2+4+6+8) ÷ 4 = 20 ÷ 4 = 5
Note
Remember
Mode = most common. Median = middle value (arrange in order first!). Mean = total ÷ count. A data set can have more than one mode, or no mode at all.
