Frame Structures

Design and build frame structures

Frame Structures

A frame structure is made of parts (members) joined together. The frame gives the structure its shape and strength. Examples include pylons, cranes, roof trusses and bicycle frames. Triangles are the strongest shape in frame structures.
Example

Building a Strong Frame

Make a square from 4 straws and pins — it wobbles easily (unstable). Now add a diagonal straw across the middle — it becomes rigid! This is why roof trusses and bridges use triangles — they cannot collapse like squares can.
Note

Remember

Triangulation (adding diagonals to create triangles) is the key to making frame structures strong and stable. The Eiffel Tower and electricity pylons in SA all use this principle.

Key Vocabulary

MemberOne part (bar or beam) of a frame structure
TriangulationAdding triangles to make a frame structure stronger
