Numbers to 100 000

In Grade 5 we work with numbers up to 100 000. These numbers have five digits and use place value: ten-thousands, thousands, hundreds, tens and ones. Understanding place value helps us read, write and order large numbers.

The number 64 827: • 6 ten-thousands = 60 000 • 4 thousands = 4 000 • 8 hundreds = 800 • 2 tens = 20 • 7 ones = 7 Expanded: 60 000 + 4 000 + 800 + 20 + 7 = 64 827

Ordering Large Numbers

Order from smallest to largest: 45 230, 54 320, 43 520 Compare ten-thousands: 4, 5, 4 Two have 4 ten-thousands — compare thousands: 5 > 3 Answer: 43 520, 45 230, 54 320

Remember

When comparing numbers, always start from the left-most digit. The number with the greater digit in the highest place value is the larger number.
