Government Services

Services funded by tax money

Government Services and Tax

The government provides services that benefit everyone: schools, hospitals, roads, police, water and electricity. These are paid for by tax — money collected from people's salaries, businesses and purchases (VAT). Tax is how we share the cost of public services.
Example

What Tax Pays For

Tax money → Government → Services for all Education: free schools, teacher salaries, textbooks Health: public hospitals and clinics Safety: police, courts, prisons Infrastructure: roads, bridges, dams Social grants: child support, pension, disability VAT (15%): Every time you buy something, 15% goes to government
Note

Remember

Paying tax is a responsibility — it funds services we all use. In SA, social grants (like the child support grant of R510/month) help millions of vulnerable families. Citizens have the right to demand that tax money is used well and not stolen through corruption.
