3D Art & Sculpture

Create 3D artworks using clay and recycled materials

Three-Dimensional Art

3D art has height, width AND depth — you can walk around it and see it from different angles. Sculpture is 3D art made by shaping materials like clay, wire, wood or recycled objects. Unlike flat drawings, sculptures occupy real space and can be touched.
Example

3D Art Activity

Make a clay animal: 1. Start with a ball of clay (body) 2. Pull out or attach legs, head, tail 3. Add details: eyes, ears, texture 4. Smooth surfaces or add patterns 5. Let dry completely Recycled sculpture: build a robot or animal using boxes, bottles, lids, wire and tape
Note

Remember

3D art uses real materials and space. Types include: sculpture (carved or modelled), construction (built from pieces), assemblage (recycled objects combined). SA artists like Jackson Hlungwani create powerful sculptures from wood, and many communities make art from recycled materials.
