Drama: Simple Scripts

Read and perform short scripted dialogues

Reading and Performing Scripts

A script is the written text of a play or performance. It includes dialogue (what characters say), stage directions (movements and actions) and character names. Reading a script helps actors know their lines, when to speak and how to move on stage.
Example

Script Format

SIPHO: (enters excitedly) I got the job! I finally got the job! THANDI: (jumps up from chair) Really? That's wonderful news! SIPHO: (hugging Thandi) I start on Monday. THANDI: (smiling) I'm so proud of you. Character name in CAPITALS, stage directions in (brackets), dialogue after the colon
Note

Remember

When reading a script aloud: speak clearly, use appropriate expression, pause at punctuation marks. Stage directions tell you what to DO (movements, expressions). Dialogue tells you what to SAY. Practice reading scripts to improve fluency and expression.
