Drama: Mime & Gesture

Communicate stories through body movement

Telling Stories Without Words

Mime uses body movement and facial expressions to tell stories without speaking. Mimes use exaggerated gestures so the audience can understand clearly. Actions like pulling a rope, opening a door or eating food must be shown clearly through precise body movements.
Example

Mime Exercises

Try miming these actions (no words!): • Opening a heavy door • Eating a very sour lemon • Walking against a strong wind • Catching a butterfly gently • Lifting a very heavy box Tip: exaggerate movements and facial expressions so the audience can see clearly.
Note

Remember

Mime is an important skill for all actors — it teaches body awareness and physical expression. For deaf learners, physical expression and visual storytelling are especially powerful. The whole body communicates: hands, face, posture and movement all tell the story.
