Solve division problems in context
What is Division?
Division means sharing equally or grouping. If you have 20 sweets and share among 4 friends, each friend gets 20 ÷ 4 = 5 sweets. Division is the opposite of multiplication.
Example
Sharing Problems
Problem: 36 oranges are shared equally among 6 baskets. How many in each basket?
36 ÷ 6 = 6 oranges per basket.
Problem: A teacher has 45 pencils for 9 learners. Each learner gets: 45 ÷ 9 = 5 pencils.
Example
Grouping Problems
Problem: You have 32 stickers and want to put 8 on each page. How many pages do you need?
32 ÷ 8 = 4 pages.
Problem: A baker makes 56 cookies and packs 7 in each bag. How many bags?
56 ÷ 7 = 8 bags.
Division with Remainders
Sometimes things do not share equally. 25 ÷ 4 = 6 remainder 1. This means 6 in each group with 1 left over. We write: 25 ÷ 4 = 6 r 1.

Key words in division problems: 'share equally', 'divide', 'how many in each', 'how many groups'. Always check by multiplying your answer by the divisor: 6 × 4 = 24, plus remainder 1 = 25. ✓
