Writing Critical Literary Essays

The Grade 12 literary essay is a formal, analytical response to a prescribed work. It requires a clear thesis statement, sustained argument, integration of textual evidence, and critical evaluation. You must demonstrate insight into the author's craft and the text's significance.

Essay Structure for Paper 2

Introduction (~50 words): Name the text and author. Paraphrase the question. State your thesis. Body paragraph 1: First argument + embedded quote + analysis. Body paragraph 2: Second argument + embedded quote + analysis. Body paragraph 3: Third argument + embedded quote + analysis. Body paragraph 4 (optional): Counter-argument or deeper insight. Conclusion (~50 words): Restate thesis. Evaluate the author's success. End with a thought-provoking statement. Total: 350–400 words in 40 minutes.
