Diversity and Discrimination
South Africa is one of the most diverse nations on Earth. While diversity is a strength, discrimination — treating people unfairly because of their differences — remains a challenge. Racism, sexism, homophobia, and ableism are all prohibited by the Constitution.
Example
Addressing Discrimination
Recognise your own biases: everyone has unconscious biases. Challenge stereotypes: question generalisations about groups. Speak up: if you witness discrimination, support the victim and report it. Educate yourself about different cultures, religions, and ways of life.
Note
Remember
Section 9 of the Constitution guarantees equality and prohibits unfair discrimination. The Equality Court and the South African Human Rights Commission handle discrimination complaints.
Key Vocabulary
DiversityThe range of differences among people, including race, culture, gender, and ability
DiscriminationUnfair treatment of a person based on their identity or characteristics
BiasA preference or prejudice for or against something, often unconscious
