Summary Writing
Summarize main and supporting ideas from texts
What is Summary Writing?
A summary is a short version of a longer text that includes only the main and supporting ideas. In the NSC exam, you are typically asked to find 7 points from a given passage and write them in your own words within a word limit (usually 90 words).
Steps to Write a Summary
1. Read the passage carefully — at least twice.
2. Identify the main points (underline or number them).
3. List the required number of points in your own words.
4. Combine points into a coherent paragraph.
5. Count your words and edit to stay within the limit.
6. Do not add your own opinion.
Example
Practice
Original (50 words): 'Water pollution is a serious problem in South Africa. Factories dump chemicals into rivers. People throw litter into streams. This kills fish and plants. Polluted water causes diseases like cholera. Communities must work together to keep our water clean.'
Summary (25 words): 'Water pollution, caused by factory chemicals and litter, destroys aquatic life and spreads diseases. Communities must collaborate to protect South Africa's water resources.'
Note
Common Mistakes
Do not copy sentences word for word — paraphrase. Do not include examples unless they are a main point. Do not exceed the word limit. Number your points in the draft, then combine them into a paragraph.
